  • "Title:  Efficiency of biodegradation of aromatic hydrocarbons in the soil is not influenced by addition of Biofertilizer obtained through anaerobic digestion"

  • Abstract: The anaerobic digestion of industrial wastes produces a biogas that is an alternative to the use of fossil fuels for energy production. At end of this process, the stabilized biomass presents high levels of nutrients, which can be used both as biofertilizers in agriculture and for the biodegradation of contaminants in the soil through improvement of microbiota. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate biogas production by industrial wastes and to use the biofertilizer for the bioremediation of soils previously contaminated with gasoline. Biomass generated approximately 10L of methane and 3L of other gases. Anaerobic incubation reduced total and volatile solids, as well as biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, and carbon and nitrogen contents of the biomass. The bioremediation experiment showed that 30 days after contamination of the soil, both contaminated soil (SC) and the contaminated soil with added biofertilizer (SBC) presented an equal reduction in the amount of aromatic hydrocarbons. Fifteen days after contamination, the addition of the biofertilizer improved the degradation efficiency of mono-aromatic hydrocarbons; however, the degradation of poly-aromatic hydrocarbons was less efficient. So, we conclude that the anaerobic incubation of industrial wastes generates a high amount of biogas, and biofertilizer disposal in contaminated soil does not affect the efficiency of the degradation of aromatic hydrocarbons after 30 days.

Shell Eco Marathon Europe Participant - (Visit to United Kingdom)

(May 2017)

  • Team Participant at Shell Eco Marathon, London representing the Eco-Runner Team Delft, from the Netherlands.

An annual competition sponsored by Shell, in which participants build special vehicles to achieve the highest possible fuel efficiency. It has different classes of competition according to the energy source used: Fuel cells, solar cells, gasoline, diesel fuel and LPG. During the competition, cars must attain an average speed of at least 15 mph (23 km/h) over a distance of 10 miles (16 km). The course is typically a motor racing track or closed off city streets. The fuel is strictly measured out for each entrant at the start and end of the course. The difference is used to calculate the vehicle's average fuel consumption. Solar-powered vehicles are not eligible for the grand prize for fuel efficiency.
